Gene - I'm from Oregon but I served at NAS Memphis in the early 60's. Yes, I observed racial discrimation in Tennessee and Mississippi while stationed there. Six of we Marines went into a cocktail lounge in Millington, a mile from the base, and the waitress said she could take our orders but she couldn't serve "him", pointing to PFC Green, a black Marine from California who I had known in bootcamp and would later serve with at MCAS El Toro, in Santa Ana, CA. This nation has made tremendous strides in race equality since then. Growing up in Oregon I attended elementary grade school and high school with lots of blacks (one in ten students) and we all got along great. Then, in the mid to late sixties, black agitators came to Oregon and told the blacks living there that they were betraying their race. How dare they be happy and content with their standard of living when so many others across the nation are suffering? We'd see the newsreels of course but we had none of that in Oregon. So what happened? To advance "civil rights" in America racismin Oregon took a giant step backward. "White" people (non-blacks) who had been civil, courtreous, and cooperative were now branded "racist bigots". If they weren't then they would have to prove it? How should they prove it, pray tell? Well, hire unqualified and unskilled people to work in well paying jobs and buy houses in nice neighborhoods would be a good start - probably. So the "racist bigots", against their better judgement, did that and guess what? Not surprisingly business and commerce suffered because new hires had no idea of what to do or how to do it and what they did was an example of why they were not hired previously. As for new houses in nice neighborhoods they bought into houses they couldn't afford, those fell into disrepair, and the people living in them did not behave in the same composed manner as their established neighbors. The city government stepped in to try and prop up suffering businesses and deteriorating neighborhoods but the losses far outweighed the successes.
When a black person cries "racism!" we need to assess the facts and separate the truth from the perception. Dr. Gates was wrong to incite this needless controversy, but we need to know who alerted all these news media? Why? Were they hoping to ignite a spark felt round the world?
The facts do not seem to support the conclusions put forth here.

Gene,
The person who said "Don't be Retarded' is a moron.
Maybe that person is a former or current prosecutor!!!!!!! It wouldn't surprise me.
The penalty is too harsh. Use common sense!!! Punish the individual students, not the school.
Make the individuals responsible for their actions, not all those who did nothing wrong.

Gene,
Thanks for taking the time to read my article about gays. The fact you actually took the time to read it says you at least seem to be open to the issue of gays having the same "rights" as married people. I did not say they should be able to marry - just have the same equality.
To finish - you counter dict yourself often when responding. You get upset when someone pushes back at you, for your comment - but when you pushed back and pretty much bashed me for my comments you didn't seem to mind. If you are going to dish it out - you have to be willing to take it. Also, when dishing it out, it would be smart to do your homework before making a comment on such a volatile subject. Eric I believe his name was - was only pointing out the obvious - you didn't have all the facts, you "were" reacting and making statements that were racial towards gay people. To say aids is a gay disease was just plain ignorant, ill informed, and grossly poor judgment. Why would you spew such hate? People said that when the aids epidemic began - more than 2 1/2 decades ago!! It only shows your bigotry, and lack of common sense. That is like saying breast cancer exists because of women! In every study for the past 20 years shows that heterosexual people use condoms far less than gay people. The disease itself was "never" traced back to gay people - it was traced back to a type of monkey in the African jungle - which passed it on by biting people and drawing blood, therefore transferring the virus from the host to the person it bit. The type of monkey was sot out and destroyed - do you know why the disease is still active - when it would have been extinct like the Ebola virus - it was because of straight men having unprotected sex with gay men! The gay population stomped the virus out in 3 years - no new cases - the cases all began popping up in straight married men and women! Still to this day there very, very, few aids patients that are gay! They took the precautions necessary. It is straight people like you and your wife that have to worry now! Oh, and if your wife "was" cheating on you - do you actually think she would tell you - or if she has had one indescression do you think she would tell you??? Ha, Ha, Ha, you are really naive aren't you? Funny you blame the medical problems and a virus that would be extinct if it had not been for married men - much like the Jim Bakers of the world standing at a pulpit condemning gay people while he was sleeping with men all along!! How many heads of religious organizations have been busted for having sex with their own sex - not just opposite sex??? Oh my goodness. I suppose you still call black people - colored people don't you? That is the same as @!$%# I hope you know! If you can't change with the times and be more accepting like any religion preaches then put your head back into the sand and stop making such dumb comments and you won't have to worry about the responses you get!

The research, to be published Friday in the Journal of Public Health, was compiled from more than 23 million hospital records from 37 states between 1988 and 2005.
The record is clear: Dick Cheney and the Bush administration were incompetent war fighters. They ignored Afghanistan for 7 years with a crude approach to counter-insurgency warfare best illustrated by: 1. Deny it. 2. Ignore it. 3. Bomb it.
The complete map of Michelle Obama's ancestors connects the first African-American first lady to the history of slavery, tracing their five-generation journey from bondage to a front-row seat to the presidency.
In what were supposed to be off-the-record comments, President Barack Obama called musician Kanye West a "jackass" because of the performer's outburst at a music awards ceremony.
